⊙ What kind of place is Bukchon?

Bukchon is the gathering town for high-ranking people in Joseon Dynasty and is located between Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace. Bukchon is called “a museum in urban” because there are many cultural assets and a variety of folk materials. The meaning of Bukchon is that there is in the north of Cheonggyecheon stream, Namchon is in the south of Cheonggyecheon stream and Joongchon is along Cheonggyecheon stream. Joongchon was a residence of Joongin but bukchon was the center of supreme power of Joseon Dynasty.

⊙ What kind of place is Unhyeongung Palace?

Unhyeongung Palace is the place where Gojong lived before he became the king, and also the home of Heounseon Daewongun who had supreme power at the time. In Unhyeon Palace, you can feel the beauty of Korea traditional houses and enjoy Korean modern history. At the period of Cheoljong, a folk song widely talked about the Power of king in Unhyeongung Palace, old site of Gansanggam, where Gojong had lived in until he was 12 years old. Also Daewongun enlarged the site of Unhyeongung Palace after Gojong was made king.

Norakdang is a central building in Unhyeongung Palace. It was used at big events like the 60th birthday or family’s party. It was said that “there is only about 45cm between Norakdang and sky.” It was written by Kim Byong-Hak, who was Daejehak. When Gojong and Empress Myeongseong were married, all preparation was done at Norakdang and Empress Myeongseong received queen lessons after 3 Times of Slelection there.​

Irodang is located in the inner part and It is the main building of Unhyeongung Palace with Norakdang. Irodang has a separate space, it’s shape of ‘ㅁ’ to admit only female. That was the place where Mrs. Min took charge of the household of Unhyeongung Palace and Empress Myeongseong had custom lessons before marriage.
