Pledis Entertainment's rookie boy group SEVENTEEN proved that, despite having debuted a little over a year ago, they shone like diamonds on stage at their first Singapore fan event on 13 August 2016. Held at MegaBox Convention Centre (Big Box), the venue was brimming with fans hours before the event as they rallied together to spread word of fan projects and to distribute an array of fan-support items. This being SEVENTEEN's first performance in the Asia Pacific region (aside from Japan), many international fans flew to Singapore to show their support.
In the midst of dim lights, the 13 members appeared on stage and kicked off with 'Shining Diamonds' followed by 'Rock'. The resounding cheers from Carats (fans) almost drowned SEVENTEEN's vocals even with the microphone advantage. It was a full house and Carats made their presence known by cheering non-stop while waving their pastel-lilac lightsticks.
The rookie group appeared slightly awkward and nervous initially but they soon warmed up and were dishing out endless amounts of fan-service and charms to entertain their fans. From showing their hilarious acting and interpretation skills in a game of 'Charades' to belting out high notes and a spontaneous chicken dance battle, SEVENTEEN knew how to work their way into the hearts of fans. The vocal sub-unit members (Seungkwan, Jeonghan and DK) became competitive and battled out to see who could reach the highest notes. Jeonghan eventually claimed victory with a hair-raising screech!
During the talk segment, led by Seungkwan, the group tried their best to fulfill fans' requests which included showing aegyo, shooting hearts and impromptu singing. Vernon was proposed to via the post-it note by a fangirl with the name of Janice, to which he responded with a smile, "Let me think about it."
SEVENTEEN performed fan-favourites including 'Adore U', 'Mansae', 'Pretty U' and 'Very Nice'. To top it off, the members performed in their respective sub-units (vocal, performance and hip hop units) and showed great versatility. The vocal unit consisting of Woozi, Jeonghan, Joshua, DK and Seungkwan crooned to 'When I Grow Up' while the performance team made up of Hoshi, Jun, The8 and Dino exploded in choreography to the song 'OMG'. Finally, the hip hop sub-unit consisting of leader S.Coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu and Vernon impressed with a sleek performance of 'Fronting'.
The encore saw fans dashing to the front of the stage, many of whom stood on the seats to get a better glimpse of their idols. SEVENTEEN aptly wrapped up the show with 'Healing' and 'Love Letter'. To further express their love and appreciation, the members threw colourful autographed balls during their ending stage.
S.Coups: (In Korean) When we return to Korea, we will think of Singapore Carats. Also, we'll continue to work hard to make more music.
Mingyu: (In Korean) Thank you very much everyone. (In English) I'm so happy to see you. Thank you and I love you very much! We will come again! (shows a heart gesture)
Joshua: (In English) Singapore is the first stop for our Asia tour. We love Singapore... You guys are the best! This is a memory that we will never forget.
The night ended with beautiful memories and some lucky fans had the opportunity for a hi-touch and photo session with SEVENTEEN. Some Carats were seen caught up in emotions and crying tears of happiness having had the chance to meet this gem-like rookie group outside of Korea. SEVENTEEN will continue on their Asia Pacific "Shining Diamonds" Tour 2016 with stops in Manila, Jakarta, Bangkok and Australia.
